Hiroki is an assistant professor at T University where Misaki currently attends. He was initially in love with his childhood friend, Akihiko, but feelings soon vanished upon realizing his affections would never be returned. Before long, he falls in love with Kusama Nowaki, forming the pairing of Junjou Egoist, in which he is the "uke" (receiver/bottom) of said relationship.
∳ Background //
Hiroki was born from an affluent family which explains his carefree attitude towards advancing in school (money-worry free) as well as having a mountain collection of books. Since young, he had always been a sore loser; absolutely detesting defeat even if it kills him. For instance, his elementary schedule: Monday - cram school, Tuesday - swimming, Wednesday - piano, Thursday - cram school and kendo, Friday - caligraphy, and Saturday - cram school and swimming. Despite having numerous activities resulting to eventual frustration, he persevered in continuing because of his ego as well as dread of having others think inferior of him. It is ultimately his pride that "digs" his own grave.
Hiroki falls under the tsundere archetype which is a term used for an arrogant, aggressive personality that is fundamentally tender and loving underneath or an ultimately kind individual yet whose actions say otherwise. Because of his beastly temper, he is often called "Demon Kamijou" and is feared among his students yet if one looks closely, Hiroki is actually an introvert, easily flustered when provoked.
Hiroki is a covert dreamer; he silently yearns but he doesn't take any point to voice or act these desires, intimidated by rejections. He tames them rather well in order to not delude his reality as well as keep his businesslike disposition. He perceives such feelings selfish and since said emotion causes imbalance, he wishes to stay out of trouble's hair. Despite his attempt of forming an unbreakable, metallic barrier to shield him from wounds, however, Hiroki is still vulnerable because of the fervor he harbors.
Hiroki is usually frank with his assessment of others (whether personality or work-wise) as he is not afraid of how others would think. Ironically, he finds it quite difficult to voice his own sentiments as well as dealing with those who are direct with their affection (i.e. Nowaki).
A lover of literature, Hiroki has an immense collection of books (basically, the inhabitants of his apartment), and often seeks refuge in them when feeling blue.
∳ Notable Quotes //
- "You idiot!! I may not look like it, but I'm number one in the Japanese Department. I meant I'm going to graduate school." [Act 1, to Nowaki]
- "'Nowaki' means 'typhoon.' Since when was I sucked in by it? Dazed by you. Dizzied by you. By the time I noticed, I had already fallen in love." [Act 1, thoughts]
- "I wish I could be his emotional support or anything." [Act 2, thoughts]
- "I used to think that only happiness lays between lovers. But in reality, I'm very anxious. Very anxious." [Act 2, thoughts]
- "I look stupid. Doing anything for a particular someone. He's a blundering kid, but I want to see his innocent happiness. And if just telling him my feelings will make him happy and smile for me ... just doing that ... is enough to make a person happy ... Then it's even more so if you do it for someone you truly love." [Act 2, thoughts]
- "I can't say those things yet ("Me too!" or "Love me more!") but allow me to savor the taste of that pleasure. Then, destroy all my pride to shambles." [Act 2, thoughts]
∳ Personal Opinion //
How could no one like Hiro-chan? Sure, he's kind of testy sometimes and is a vicious alligator when aggravated but he's undoubtedly fragile. The wall he built around himself which he initially thought was sturdy is clearly not so. If it were, he wouldn't be affected by his environment.
I don't know much about his childhood/family except the one chapter of Junjou Minimum I've read, but noting his typical Japanese trait of "modesty," he wasn't really trained in expressing his real feelings which hinders him from reaching out to others, and thus, being lonely. Because of limiting himself within certain people, he is eventually frightened of rejection and so suppresses his sentiments.
It's rather cute that while he claims he's not romantically inclined as he has his macho pride, deep down it seems that he is a amorous at heart - deny as he might. If he really wasn't, it wouldn't have crossed his mind. After all, his justification of not doing otherwise is simply because of his self-regard. This in mind, I think many of us who are too shy or simply stubborn can relate to this. ❤ It's simply adorable how Hiroki can burst his secrets after accumulating them for so long and feel rather thankful (secretly, of course) for losing his poise as his feelings were acknowledged and not ignored.
If only Hiroki would open up a little more, then the pairing would possibly avoid a good amount of problems. Then again, it's not Egoist without Hiro being like this. ❤ *laughs*
